10 Best Warren Buffett Stocks To Buy For 2014

Warren Buffett recent column on Fortune Magazine has a controversial title hy stocks beat gold and bondsand caught many eyeballs. But if one read into the article, one would know that Warren Buffett didn mean to promote stocks. The phrase he used was roductive assets

My personal experience as a writer is that editors are more than willing to change the title of articles for the sake of attracting eyeballs. Although I didn see such thing with GuruFocus, I saw a lot of complaint in other places. The article is from Buffett, but the title could probably be cooked up by Fortune editors. They know that people like to jump on to this title and start to debate right away. And for a media company, mouse clicks are real money.

In Buffett own words:

y own preference -- and you knew this was coming -- is our third category: investment in productive assets, whether businesses, farms, or real estate. Ideally, these assets should have the ability in inflationary times to deliver output that will retain its purchasing-power value while requiring a minimum of new capital investment. Farms, real estate, and many businesses such as Coca-Cola (KO), IBM (IBM), and our own See's Candy meet that double-barreled test. Certain other companies -- think of our regulated utilities, for example -- fail it because inflation places heavy capital requirements on them. To earn more, their owners must invest more. Even so, these investments will remain superior to nonproductive or currency-based assets./p>

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By John Rosevear]

Luxury car sales represent just a small portion of overall car sales, but they generate big profits for their makers. So far in 2013, German giant Daimler's (NASDAQOTH: DDAIF  ) Mercedes-Benz brand leads the U.S. luxury-car market. But key rivals have been gaining ground, and the battle for this lucrative market is growing fierce.

General Motors shares trade for just 8.7 times expected 2014 earnings and an almost pitiful 0.37 times sales. To put this in perspective, Daimler (DDAIF) — my pick in InvestorPlace Best Stocks of 2013 contest — trades for 14.3 times expected 2014 earnings and 0.58 times sales.

  • [By Alex Planes]

For Daimler (NASDAQOTH: DDAIF  ) , the move offered a way to make greater inroads to the lucrative American market. For Chrysler, the prospect of taking on the much stronger Ford (NYSE: F  ) and General Motors (NYSE: GM  ) in Europe was tremendously enhanced by Daimler's home-field advantage. It was at the time the largest industrial merger in history, although the combined company would still be only the fifth-largest automaker in the world, behind both Ford and GM. When combined, the two companies had more than 440,000 employees and a market capitalization nearing $100 billion.

According to the ACEA, in the first three months of 2013 General Motors saw sales drop 13 percent, PSA Peugeot sales were down 15 percent, Ford was down by 20 percent, Toyota (NYSE: TM  ) 18 percent, and Fiat 9 percent. In the premium market, which had continued to sell well as the mass market slumped, manufacturers were starting to feel the pinch. BMW was down a slight 0.9 percent while Daimler (NASDAQOTH: DDAIF  ) rose 0.2 percent.

  • [By Jonas Elmerraji]

Gas pipeline company Spectra Energy Partners (SEP) is showing traders the exact same setup right now -- albeit slightly more textbook than Barrick's. Spectra is another ascending triangle with resistance at $46. A breakout above the $46 level is the signal that it's time to be a buyer in this nat gas transporter.

Whenever you're looking at any technical price pattern, it's critical to think in terms of those buyers and sellers. Triangles and other pattern names are a good quick way to explain what's going on in a stock, but they're not the reason it's tradable. Instead, it all comes down to supply and demand for shares.

That $46 resistance level is a price where there has been an excess of supply of shares; in other words, it's a place where sellers have been more eager to step in and take gains than buyers have been to buy. That's what makes a breakout above it so significant -- the move means that buyers are finally strong enough to absorb all of the excess supply above that price level.

Don't be early on this trade.
