Taser: Long-Term Potential Remains Very Strong

Axon (AAXN), perhaps better known as Taser has performed incredibly well over the past 52 weeks. In fact, the shares are up by a staggering 175% since I recommended the company at $22.50 back in April of last year. Today the stock is trading at about $62. So, what has compelled this unique small cap company to nearly triple its market cap to $3.3 billion over the past year? Perhaps more importantly, can such stellar growth continue going forward at Taser?

A Bright Future for PayPal

The war on cash is going strong, and PayPal(NASDAQ:PYPL) is a fierce competitor that investors might just want to take a closer look at.

In this Industry Focus: Technology segment, analyst Dylan Lewis and Motley Fool contributor Matthew Cochrane explain why PayPal is still worthy of a spot in your portfolio, how the company's recent acquisition of iZettle demonstrates this, how PayPal stands out from its competition, and more.

A full transcript follows the video.

This video was recorded on May 25, 2018.

Dylan Lewis: Looking at this news, looking at the competitive news, you're a shareholder, I'm a shareholder. Matt, how are you feeling about this?

Matthew Cochrane: Look, I'm very bullish on PayPal. I've been a shareholder for about two years, and I don't have any plans to sell my shares any time soon. I think what makes PayPal attractive is, one, like we were saying earlier, it can offer an entire suite of payment services to consumers. Again, are the credit cards coming out with their own standard for e-commerce checkout? Yes. Will that compete with PayPal's One Touch? Yes. But you can't use that platform to make P2P payments, for instance.

Then, another reason why I like PayPal, and this goes back to everything, it does seem like, at times, that everybody is gunning for them. You have Apple Pay, you have Google Pay or Android Pay, or Square with the Cash app. But, most of these are specific to a device. Like, if you want to use Apple Pay, you have to have an Apple device. Same with Android Pay. For credit cards, for their digital wallets, you have to have that kind of credit card to use. For an operating system, etc. PayPal is agnostic. You can use it across any device, any operating system. It doesn't matter what bank you have. The banks rallied around Zelle earlier, to promote Zelle, which is another great P2P platform. But it doesn't matter. You have to have a bank that participates in that program. PayPal, you can use it across any bank, any device, any service. It really is that universal digital payment platform.

Lewis: And I look at the acquisition they made, specifically iZettle, and say, this looks like something that will continue to fuel the virtuous cycle that we've seen with this company before. You have member growth because people are already using apps. There's the network effect of, you're able to pay your friends with Venmo or something like that. Then, as merchants come on to the platform, they're coming on because consumers are there, and the merchant acceptance fuels more consumer growth.

So, you continue to have different parts of the business feeding each other. I think, if they have a really great payment facilitation option in Europe, that will help a ton with customer acquisition there. It just continues to feed something that's already worked so well for this business.

Cochrane: Absolutely. The more PayPal account holders utilize their accounts, the more merchants want to sign on to PayPal's platforms. And the more merchants on PayPal's platform, the more customers use their accounts. And on and on that network effect goes, absolutely.

Lewis: I think this acquisition also shows a little bit of the optionality that a company like PayPal has, a company like Square has. We're talking about PayPal here, I don't think Square is a bad business, by any stretch. You look at both of them, though, they are disruptive payment companies, Square has been able to do a lot of things after getting merchants involved, where they've layered in all these extra services. I would not be shocked to see PayPal be able to do the same thing, now that they're moving more into that space.

Cochrane: No, absolutely. In fact, yesterday, I was listening to some of the presentations at PayPal's investor day, and when they talk about their merchant services, they have really co-opted Square's language that they use. When they talk about democratizing payment services, and empowering small merchants to compete with the big boys in their industry ... they absolutely have their eyes on some of the same exact markets.

3 Top Energy Stocks to Buy Now

With the end of May quickly approaching and the summer driving season set to kick off with the Memorial Day holiday weekend, plenty of investors are thinking about higher oil and gasoline prices. But as they're wont to do, three Motley Fool investors surprised us when we asked for three energy stocks worth considering now and they didn't pick a single one from the crude oil or gasoline business.

Is this a case of taking advantage of the market's tendency to look one way while the real opportunity is somewhere else? Maybe so. After all, organic waste products recyclerDarling Ingredients Inc.(NYSE:DAR), upstart natural gas businessTellurian Inc.(NASDAQ:TELL), and global wind turbine giantVestas Wind Systems ADR(NASDAQOTH:VWDRY) have all seen their stock prices fall so far this year, but their long-term prospects look quite good.

A drawing of two light bulbs separated by a dotted line with risk written under one and reward under the other.

Image source: Getty Images.

But these are three very different businesses with different risk profiles that must be considered. Here's why these real-world investors think they're worth buying now and whether they belong in your portfolio.

Going green (in a surprising way)

John Bromels (Darling Ingredients): With Brent crude prices now nearing $80 per barrel, things are looking good for the oil industry. So good, in fact, that bargains have become increasingly hard to find. That's why I'm making the unconventional choice of fat renderer -- and restaurant grease trap recycler -- Darling Ingredients.

You might want to skip this paragraph if you've just eaten. Because the "ingredients" in the company's name are animal by-products. Yep, if it's something disgusting that comes from a dead animal -- or sometimes even a live one -- Darling probably processes it into something useful, like components of animal feed, soap, fertilizer, gelatin, sausage, and even fuel.

That's right:Through its Diamond Green Diesel joint venture withValero, Darling recycles animal fats and used cooking oil into biodiesel fuel. And it's about to start pumping out a lot more of it, thanks to a planned 275-million-gallon expansion to its processing facilities, which is slated to wrap in August 2018 and increase production by 70% once it's fully on line.Darling is also benefiting from the reinstatement of the blenders' tax credit that helps biodiesel producers. The overall market for biofuels may also benefit from high petroleum prices as a potentially cheaper -- not to mention greener -- alternative.

The best part for investors looking to buy in now is that many of Darling's valuation metrics like P/E ratio and EV to EBITDA are now lower than those of most independent oil producers after having been higher for many years. It's a great opportunity to buy into a niche renewable energy market at an attractive price.

A second chance at an emerging LNG investment

Tyler Crowe(Tellurian): Let me start by saying that I'm a shareholder in Tellurian, and it's entirely possible that this will be the investing hill that I die on. That said, I think Tellurian has the potential to generate massive shareholder returns over the next several years for those who are patient and willing to wait for a payoff and risk the losses.

Stop me if you think you've heard this story before. Charif Souki and his team want to develop an LNG export terminal in the U.S. Gulf Coast, but need to raise lots of capital to get the project off the ground. A decade ago, that was the story of Cheniere Energy, which has arguably exceededeveryone's expectations as it brings its facilities on line ahead of schedule and has been turning in earnings results that fly in the face of conventional thinking in the LNG market. Today, that story can be applied to Tellurian. Souki isn't the CEO of this new attempt at building an LNG facility, but he has taken the chairman role and one of his top Cheniere lieutenants, Meg Gentle, is the CEO.

While the script isn't exactly the same as it was at Cheniere -- it is looking to sign up customers as equity partners instead of selling volume contracts, and is looking to make larger investments in pipelines and its own natural gas reserves -- this path looks very familiar for investors. Management says it's currently assessing potential partners for the project and expect to start construction by the end of the year.

There remain many more unanswered questions when it comes to Tellurian, but we have seen this management team pull this off before. If this encore performance looks anything like the prior one, then investors will probably be happy they got in early.

A strong tailwind

Jason Hall(Vestas Wind Systems): Forgiving the terrible pun above, now is a wonderful time to make an opportunistic investment in Vestas. The Danish company is a global leader in the manufacture, maintenance, and installation of wind turbines, an industry that can be very cyclical from one year to the next but has incredible long-term growth prospects.

Vestas has two big catalysts working in its favor. First is the acceleration of investments in renewables, driven as much by falling costs as the environmental benefits. Add in the advances in energy storage, and wind energy paired with storage is on track to undercut fossil fuels in price within a few years. This is why global energy investments have been swinging toward renewables in recent years.

Second, global urban and middle class populations are growing, and it's going to take a lot more energy production to meet the needs of the extra 1 billion people on the planet in coming decades. Vestas is positioned to be a key supplier of wind turbines to help meet this global need.

Over the past year, shares of Vestas fell as much as 40% from the peak, and are still down about 30% at recent prices. And while its earnings have dropped over the past year -- EPS is down 12% since April 2017 -- its stock price and valuation have slid even further. At recent prices, Vestas shares trade for 14.5 times trailing earnings. The market's short-term focus has created a great opportunity for long-term investors who can ride out the cyclical swings in demand and profit over the long haul.

Beloved Multi-Generational Character Celebrates 60 Years With First-Ever American Exhibition

&l;p&g;It was Christmas Eve in 1956 when Michael Bond bought a lonely-looking stuffed bear from a London shop. He took it home as a present for his wife, and they named the bear Paddington, after the nearby railway station. Working as a BBC cameraman at the time, Bond began writing a story about the bear. But it wasn&a;rsquo;t long before he realized the gift was as much for him and perhaps the world as his wife.

&q;After ten days I found that I had a book on my hands. It wasn&s;t written specifically for children, but I think I put into it the kind of things I liked reading about when I was young,&q; he was reported as saying. Bond penned the story of a marmalade-loving bear from Darkest Peru, and when William Collins published it in 1958, &l;em&g;A Bear Called Paddington&l;/em&g; found a place in children&s;s literary history.

The world-famous, globally-loved Paddington Bear turns 60 this year and to celebrate, the first &l;a href=&q;https://www.carlemuseum.org/content/current-exhibitions&q; target=&q;_blank&q;&g;Paddington Bear exhibition&l;/a&g; in the United States will be on display at &l;a href=&q;https://www.carlemuseum.org/&q; target=&q;_blank&q;&g;The Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art&l;/a&g; in Amherst, Massachusetts through October. The exhibition&a;mdash;&l;em&g;Paddington Comes to America&l;/em&g;&a;mdash;is supported by &l;a href=&q;http://www.harpercollinschildrens.com/Kids/&q; target=&q;_blank&q;&g;HarperCollins Children&s;s Books&l;/a&g;, global publisher of the Paddington Bear books since 1958, and &l;a href=&q;https://www.yottoy.com/&q; target=&q;_blank&q;&g;YOTTOY&l;/a&g; Productions, toy partner of Paddington in the United States since 2005.

Bond went on to write 15 Paddington novels; and numerous picture books, compilations and gift editions have been published since. Today, more than 35 million Paddington books have been sold worldwide. The books have been translated into 40 different languages, including Latin. In 2015, in recognition of Paddington&s;s extraordinary popularity and success, Bond was made a CBE (Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire) for services to children&s;s literature.

For the last 37 years of his life, Bond lived in London, not far from Paddington Station where it all began. He continued to write until shortly before &l;a href=&q;http://www.bbc.com/news/entertainment-arts-40432946&q; target=&q;_blank&q;&g;his death&l;/a&g; in June 2017 at the age of 91, when he left behind a legacy of one of the best loved children&s;s characters in the world.

&l;em&g;Paddington Comes to America&l;/em&g; features copies of Bond&s;s notebooks, his typewriter, first edition books, memorabilia and 70 original illustrations by six artists, including a black-and-white line drawing by Peggy Fortnum, the first artist to create a visual image of Paddington. Fortnum said she prepared for the task with a visit to the &l;a href=&q;https://www.zsl.org/zsl-london-zoo&q; target=&q;_blank&q;&g;London Zoo&l;/a&g; to sketch and photograph bears. Fortnum&s;s illustrations, matching the warmth of Bond&s;s story, made the idea of a talking bear from Peru seem perfectly reasonable.

&l;img class=&q;dam-image ap size-large wp-image-5a3a1c4b2cc248f58e7f3d3e71ec0d9c&q; src=&q;https://specials-images.forbesimg.com/dam/imageserve/5a3a1c4b2cc248f58e7f3d3e71ec0d9c/960x0.jpg?fit=scale&q; data-height=&q;624&q; data-width=&q;960&q;&g; Conservative leader Margaret Thatcher, who is 53 today, holds a birthday cake in the shape of a key with the words written on it ?No. 10 Many Happy Returns Margaret,? and a giant Paddington Bear dressed in blue and wearing a Tory rosette. Several illustrators worked on various Paddington projects in the 1970s and 1980s, and in 1972, Bond wrote the first in a series of books for younger readers. These picture books required a more detailed illustrative style than the novels, and Fred Banbery was hired as the artist. Banbery illustrated six Paddington picture books. His watercolors from &l;em&g;Paddington at the Seaside&l;/em&g; are also featured in the exhibition.

Illustrator and animator, Ivor Wood, designed the puppet for the original Paddington television series in 1975. He also developed a cartoon strip of Paddington that was published in the &l;em&g;London Evening News&l;/em&g; in the late 1970s.

&l;!--nextpage--&g;

Seven of David McKee&s;s paintings from &l;em&g;Paddington at the Zoo&l;/em&g; are showcased in the exhibition. In the 1980s, McKee&a;mdash;who was already known for writing and illustrating his own books, including &l;em&g;King Rollo&l;/em&g;, &l;em&g;Elmer&l;/em&g;, and &l;em&g;Mr. Benn&l;/em&g;&a;mdash;was hired as the new artist for Paddington.

Barry Macey, who was an in-house artist with Paddington &a;amp; Co., Ltd., created the artwork for much of the older products and some of the prints. His illustrations from &l;em&g;Paddington in the Hot Seat&l;/em&g;, &l;em&g;Paddington Passes Through&l;/em&g; and &l;em&g;Paddington Takes a Cut&l;/em&g; are on display.

&l;img class=&q;size-full wp-image-1091&q; src=&q;http://blogs-images.forbes.com/robinseatonjefferson/files/2018/05/Paddington2.jpg?width=960&q; alt=&q;&q; data-height=&q;750&q; data-width=&q;1125&q;&g; 2018 Paddington Exhibition Opening.

&l;em&g;Paddington Comes to America&l;/em&g; also features the work of New England artist and current Paddington illustrator, &l;a href=&q;http://rwalley.com/welcome/&q; target=&q;_blank&q;&g;R. W. Alley&l;/a&g;. In 1997, Alley was commissioned to illustrate a new series of Paddington picture books by HarperCollins for an American audience. Alley worked closely with Bond to develop the visual look of each story. Alley noted Bond&a;rsquo;s openness to change: &a;ldquo;Bond insisted the first book be re-illustrated to reflect a major renovation at Paddington Station,&a;rdquo; he said. &a;ldquo;And although Paddington never ages, he is always relevant for the time.&a;rdquo; Alley&s;s art from more than 20 Paddington picture books is on exhibit, along with some of his preliminary sketches and dummy books.

Alley said he believes that one of the reasons Paddington has endured for six decades is the &a;ldquo;intergenerational appeal of the bear. Paddington is both a young child, experiencing a new environment, and an old soul, with adult observations to make on the world he finds,&a;rdquo; Alley said.&a;nbsp;&a;ldquo;Even though London is his world, with occasional side trips to France, his reactions to what he discovers about human behavior have a universal outlook.&a;nbsp;He is kind and generous and welcoming, and not at all averse to sticking to these principles even in the face of bad behavior from the humans he encounters. Some, he will turn to his point of view.&a;nbsp;Others, he will not. The great advantage of having a bear as a central character is that he can combine the innocence of a child with the sophistication of an adult.&a;rdquo;

Alley said, as a baby boomer himself, he can relate to Paddington &a;ldquo;because his is the optimistic world I was raised to hope for. In my boomer world, protest ended an undirected war, popular culture celebrated love and peace and understanding.&a;nbsp;Desegregation was implemented. I remember &a;lsquo;colored&a;rsquo; water fountains and entrances, when we lived three years in South Carolina, and how they vanished.&a;nbsp;Scholarship and science were celebrated enabling humans to go the moon.&a;rdquo;

Alley said the Internet is alright, but &a;ldquo;if I had to choose, I&s;d rather go to the moon, end wars, end racism and poverty, and read a book.&a;rdquo;

Recently YOTTOY hosted a special &a;ldquo;Bringing Paddington Bear to Life&a;rdquo; workshop where Alley visited the company&a;rsquo;s studio to show a group of local kids how to draw Paddington. The toymakers at YOTTOY then showed the kids how the company brings his captivating drawings to life as a Paddington Bear toy.

Also in the exhibition are copies of stills from the 1970s stop-motion television series as well as images from the two recent Paddington movies. Paddington&s;s adventures have been adapted several times for television, and at the end of 2014, the bear made his debut onto the big screen. The movie, produced by StudioCanal&a;mdash;part of the international content and media group Vivendi&a;mdash;is the best-selling non-Hollywood family movie ever released. A second Paddington movie, &l;em&g;Paddington 2&l;/em&g;, launched in the United States in January 2018.

&l;!--nextpage--&g;

A display of limited-edition plush bears in the exhibition includes a Gabrielle bear. Gabrielle was the first company to create a Paddington bear and was responsible for giving Paddington his Wellington boots to help him stand up.

&l;em&g;Paddington Comes to America&l;/em&g; also features a recreated double-decker bus. Guests are invited to board the &q;hop on/hop off&q; bus, which also doubles as a reading area. Young visitors will receive special Paddington London Bus Passes and will be encouraged to learn more about the famous sites in London featured around the gallery while having their passes stamped at each location.

&l;img class=&q;size-full wp-image-1090&q; src=&q;http://blogs-images.forbes.com/robinseatonjefferson/files/2018/05/Paddington1.jpg?width=960&q; alt=&q;&q; data-height=&q;750&q; data-width=&q;1125&q;&g; 2018 Paddington Exhibition Opening.

Ellen Keiter, chief curator at The Eric Carle, said she recalls reading Paddington books and watching the stop-motion animated series on television when she was a child. &a;ldquo;We&a;rsquo;re thrilled to be the first venue in the United States to welcome Paddington to this side of the Atlantic. He&a;rsquo;s an iconic character in children&a;rsquo;s literature, so it&a;rsquo;s only fitting that he &a;lsquo;visit&a;rsquo; The Carle.&a;rdquo;

Keiter said the exhibition is a great opportunity for both old and young to come together with books. &a;ldquo;Picture books bring people together and Paddington is no exception. He evokes nostalgia for grandparents and parents who enjoy introducing their childhood friend to the next generation,&a;rdquo; she said. &a;ldquo;Paddington is distinctly British, but the things that he deals with, the little mishaps and adventures he goes on, are universal to everyone.&a;nbsp; It&a;rsquo;s about navigating your way in the world and the joy of discovering new things.&a;rdquo;

Housing more than 11,000 objects, including 7,300 permanent collection illustrations, The Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art is a non-profit organization whose mission is to inspire a love of art and reading through picture books. The Carle collects, preserves, presents and celebrates picture books and picture-book illustrations from around the world.

Eric Carle and his wife, the late Barbara Carle, co-founded the Museum in November 2002. Carle is the renowned author and illustrator of more than 70 books, including the 1969 classic &l;em&g;The Very Hungry Caterpillar&l;/em&g;. Since opening, the 43,000-square foot facility has served more than 750,000 visitors, including 50,000 schoolchildren.
