Top 10 Penny Stocks For 2014

NEW YORK (TheStreet) -- Part 1 of 4

Electronic cigarettes, commonly called e-cigarettes, are becoming more and more common. From relative obscurity five years ago, e-cigarettes have grown to $500 million in sales in 2012, and over $1.5 billion in 2013. The growth in the market is expected to continue, with e-cigarettes sales expected to top traditional cigarettes sales within the next decade.

How can investors profit from this trend?

There are a number of ways to take advantage of the growth in the e-cigarette market. Investors who seek exposure to e-cigarettes can buy into the larger tobacco companies. They are now entering the market, following on the heels of smaller start-ups. Lorillard (LO) ($48.00 at market close on Friday, Feb. 14), Altria (MO) ($35.57 at last close) and Reynolds American (RAI) ($48.21 at last close) are all major cigarette companies. But for now, e-cigarettes are a very small portion of their overall revenues. Smaller companies such as Vapor (VPCO:OTC, $5.78 at market close on Friday, Feb. 14), Victory Electronic Cigarettes (ECIG:OTC, $13.50 at last close) and mCig (MCIG:OTC BB, 33 cents at last close) offer pure play access to e-cigarettes. In addition, mCig offers access to investing in the legalization of marijuana -- though it is also a penny stock, and inherently very risky. What Are E-Cigarettes? An e-cigarette is a battery-operated alternative nicotine delivery system. E-cigarettes have a replaceable inhaler cartridge containing vegetable glycerin and/or polyethylene glycol, flavoring and nicotine. With every inhalation, a sensor triggers a "vaporizer" to heat a small amount of liquid flavoring. The liquid turns to vapor and is drawn into the user's mouth and then lungs. The vaping technology of e-cigarettes does not burn anything. The liquid mixture is simply vaporized. The vapor does not contain the harmful additives found in true smoke from hookahs or cigarettes. The replaceable cartridges come with different nicotine levels. Each is equivalent to 2 packs of cigarettes. HowStuffWorks has created a visual on the anatomy of an e-cigarette.

LifeLock Inc. (NYSE: LOCK) has only been public for about 15 months. It is a high beta stock, trading at 55-times expected trailing earnings and almost 48-times expected 2014 earnings. LifeLock shares hit a new high of $20.83 on Friday and closed up 1.6% at $20.41 on the day. This one is up about 150% from its IPO in late 2012.

Last month when Nokia Corp. (NYSE: NOK) agreed to acquire the other half of its joint venture, Nokia Siemens Networks (NSN), from Siemens A.G. (NYSE: SI) for $2.2 billion, we wondered what in the world the Finnish mobile phone maker could have been thinking. That is still a reasonable query.

  • [By WALLSTCHEATSHEET]

Nokia develops and delivers communications products to consumers and companies worldwide. An event that is set to used to unveil new products is generating positive buzz for the company. The stock has moved higher in recent months and is currently trading near highs for the year. Over the last four quarters, earnings have been mixed while revenues have been decreasing which has left investors to expect more from the company. Relative to its peers and sector, Nokia has been a year-to-date performance leader. Look for Nokia to continue to OUTPERFORM.

Then again, all-in bets like these are always risky. HTC loves Android, but the market doesn't love HTC back. LG sings the same sad song. And do I need to remind you how far Nokia (NYSE: NOK  ) has fallen since hitching its wagon to a single horse named Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT  ) Windows Phone 8? Becoming Mr. Softy's preferred partner was supposed to be a game-changing turnaround play for Nokia, but the Finns are still searching for the first sign of market traction.

Hot Railroad Companies To Invest In 2015: Centor Energy Inc (CNTO)

Centor Energy Inc, formerly Centor, Inc., incorporated on February 16, 2011, is an exploration-stage company. The Company is engaged in the business of mineral exploration.

On November 26, 2012, the Company entered into a purchase agreement with Bullnet Gold Resources Limited. As of May 31, 2013, the Company had not generated revenues. As of May 31, 2013, the Company had no mining operations.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By James E. Brumley]

Quick, what do Chesapeake Energy Corporation (NYSE:CHK), Centor Energy Inc. (OTCBB:CNTO), and Total SA (NYSE:TOT) have in common? If you said "they're all energy companies" then technically you're right. It's not necessarily the meaningful answer that we were looking for, however. No, the more significant commonalty between TOT, CHK, and CNTO right now could be that (1) 20 years ago, nobody thought they'd be having any real success doing something they're all three now involved in.... shale mining. Yet, reality is reality. While Chesapeake Energy is best known as a natural gas play, its heavy fiscal lifting is actually being done by its oil shale mining efforts in Eagle Ford, Texas. Total SA is more of a tradition integrated oil and gas company, but it too has found success - and profits - in the shale business. What's that got to do with Centor Energy? Centor is simply following a well-proven oil shale lead. It's just doing so in a newly-proven region of the world that's rich in the resource.

While the Bakken formation is already on most investor radars, few American investors may realize that the formation stretches North into the oil and gas rich Canadian province of Saskatchewan wherestocks like Surge Energy Inc (TSE: SGY), Questerre Energy Corp (TSE: QEC), Crescent Point Energy Corp (TSE: CPG), Keyera Corp (TSE: KEY) and Centor Energy Inc (OTCBB: CNTO) have been pumping out a good flow of newsworthy news in recent weeks. I should mention that Canada oil reserves are ranked #3 after to Venezuela and Saudi Arabia with over 95% of these reserves being the oil sands of Alberta while the neighboring province of Saskatchewan (which the Bakken formation stretches into from South Dakota and Montana) along with offshore areas of Newfoundland also contain substantial production and reserves (Note:Excluding oil sands, Alberta would have 39% of Canada remaining conventional oil reserves, followed byoffshore Newfoundland with28% and Saskatchewan with 27%).

While Bakken formation oil and gas stocks have grabbed the attention ofAmerican investors, small cap Alberta or Saskatchewan oil and gas stocks Advantage Oil & Gas Ltd (NYSE: AAV), Sonde Resources Corp (NYSEMKT: SOQ) and up and coming Centor Energy Inc (OTCBB: CNTO) have been largely overlooked as they seek to exploit oil and gas (including oil sands) in the resource rich Canadian provinces of Alberta or Saskatchewan or seek strategic alternatives for their assets in these areas or themselves. It should be mentioned that Canada oil reserves are third only to Venezuela and Saudi Arabia with over 95% of these reserves being the oil sands of Alberta plus that province contains much of the country conventional oil reserves as well. In addition, the province of Saskatchewan along with offshore areas of Newfoundland contain substantial production and reserves. Excluding oil sands, Alberta would have 39% of Canada remaining conventional oil reserves, followed byoffshore Newfoundland with28% and Saskatchewan with 27%.

  • [By John Udovich]

Many American oil and gas investors are probably familiar with the major large and small cap players in the Bakken formation in North Dakota and Montana, but few American investors are probably familiar withthe active players further to the north in theoil and gas rich Canadian provinces of Saskatchewan and Albertawith small cap stocks like Alexander Energy Ltd (CVE: ALX), Renegade Petroleum Ltd (CVE: RPL) and Centor Energy Inc (OTCBB: CNTO) along with large cap Suncor Energy Inc (NYSE: SU) being among thosepumping out their share of noteworthy news lately. I should point out thatCanada oil reserves are ranked #3 after to Venezuela and Saudi Arabia with over 95% of these reserves being the controversialoil sands of Alberta while the neighboring province of Saskatchewan (which the Bakken formation actually stretches into) along with offshore areas of Newfoundland also containing substantial production and reserves. Moreover and excluding the oil sands, Alberta would have 39% of Canada remaining conventional oil reserves, followed byoffshore Newfoundland with28% and Saskatchewan with 27%.

  • [By James E. Brumley]

What do Acasti Pharma Inc. (NASDAQ:ACST), Kandi Technologies Group Inc. (NASDAQ:KNDI), and Amarantus Bioscience Holdings, Inc. (OTCBB:AMBS) have in common? Not a lot, if you're simply looking at their business lines. Kandi Technologies Group makes electric cars, and even though Amarantus Bioscience Holdings and Acasti Pharma are both in the pharmaceutical arena, they're not too much alike. There is one common element among AMBS, ACST, and KNDI right now, however... they're three of the market's most bullish setups. Anyone looking for a new trading idea here should start with one of these three.

Jae C. Hong/AP WASHINGTON -- Average U.S. mortgage rates fell for the third straight week, making it more affordable to borrow to buy a home. Mortgage company Freddie Mac said Thursday that the nationwide average for a 30-year loan fell to 4.12 percent from 4.19 percent last week. The average for a 15-year mortgage, a popular choice for people who are refinancing, also declined to 3.3 percent from 3.36 percent. The 30-year rate is down from 4.53 percent at the start of the year. Rates have fallen even though the Federal Reserve appears set at the end of this month to end its monthly bond purchases, which are intended to keep long-term borrowing rates low. Yet Fed officials have indicated that they will continue to hold shorter-term rates at near-zero levels until there are signs of rising inflation. Fed actions often influence the yield on the 10-year Treasury note, which affects mortgage rates. The 10-year note was trading at 2.32 percent at midday Thursday, down sharply from 2.41 percent a week earlier. Mortgage rates are falling as the housing market has cooled off. Average price growth has slowed, rising just 6.4 percent in August compared with a year ago, according to real estate data provider CoreLogic (CLGX). That's down from annual average gains of as much as 12 percent toward the end of last year. Similarly, sales of existing homes also declined in August. Fewer investors bought properties, and first-time buyers have yet to return to the market, according to the National Association of Realtors. Sales of new homes shot up in August, yet it remains below historic averages, according to Commerce Department data.

AP NEW YORK -- There were fewer U.S. foreclosures in July than a year ago, while properties in the foreclosure pipeline also fell as the housing market continued to improve, according to data from CoreLogic. There were 49,000 completed foreclosures last month, down from a 65,000 in July of last year, CoreLogic (CLGX) said Thursday. There were 53,000 foreclosures in June, down from an originally reported 55,000. Before the housing market's downturn in 2007, completed foreclosures averaged 21,000 a month between 2000 and 2006. Since the financial crisis began in September 2008, there have been about 4.5 million foreclosures. Foreclosures are completed when a home is either seized by the lender or sold at auction. During the past 18 months, the housing market has recovered its footing as prices and sales increased, and foreclosures slowed. A recent spike in borrowing costs, however, has slowed new mortgage applications and demand to refinance existing loans. If that persists, it could result in fewer foreclosure resales. "If demand is a little bit lower, it might slow down a bit the pace of decline in foreclosure inventories," said Mark Fleming, chief economist for CoreLogic. "But of all the housing types in demand, stressed assets are a hot commodity and are often bought by cash investors who are less sensitive to mortgage rates." There were about 949,000 homes in some stage of foreclosure, down from 1.4 million a year ago. That foreclosure inventory represented 2.4 percent of all mortgaged homes, down from 3.4 percent in July last year. The five states with the highest foreclosures in the year leading up to July were Florida, California, Michigan, Texas and Georgia, which together accounted for almost half of all foreclosures. Florida also had the highest percentage of homes sitting in foreclosure, followed by New Jersey, New York, Connecticut and Maine.

Although the Chinese government will maintain its gambling restrictions in the mainland over the next decade, Sand Corp market share and leverage in fixed costs will continue to riel in strong revenue growth from this region. Fiscal 2013 marked a 24.80% revenue increase ($13.8 billion) and operating margins continue to expand at the same pace. Despite the inherent risk of an economic slowdown in Asia or a recession in the U.S., which could put a halt to leisure spending, the company is well prepared to balance out any short-term losses. The casino operator EBITDA growth of 65.30%, for example, is an impressive result when compared to the industry average of 4.90%.

Looking forward, earnings per share are expected to continue their fast-paced upward trend, having jumped from $1.56 in 2011 to $2.79 at the end of fiscal 2013. The 21.6% return on equity, as well as 1.80% dividend yield should also be attractive to shareholders and future investors. Although Las Vegas Sand Corp is currently trading at a 24% price premium relative to the industry average of 22.60x trailing earnings, I feel very bullish about this firm long term profitability, given its strong market position in Asia.

Gevo Inc (GEVO), the worlds only commercial producer of bio based isobutanol, has made incredible strides over the last two quarters in the way of improving the fundamentals of their company. Essentially, GEVO has had to do a complete rebuild of the foundation of their company along with learn an entirely new operating process. They have successfully been able to do both along with begin commercial production, expand production to a second production train, and begin supplying the US Coast Guard with isobutanol. They have made all of these fundamental improvements to the company while the stock has remained largely unchanged since before production. This is what makes Q3/2013 so important.

Best Sliver Companies To Buy Right Now

On Jul 11, 2013, we upgraded oilfield services behemoth National Oilwell Varco Inc. (NOV) to Neutral from Underperform. Our new investment thesis is supported by a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold).

Why the Upgrade?

We like its healthy backlog, solid balance sheet and strength in international operations, particularly in the Middle East and Brazil. The Robbins & Myers acquisition will further boost NOV earnings visibility by expanding its blowout preventer product line; a critical safety machine for a well. The recent influx of offshore rig awards adds to the positive sentiment.

Detailed Analysis

Houston, TX-based NOV is one of the biggest manufacturers of drilling equipment in the world with an impressive business model. The company large installed base of rigs worldwide provides for a steady recurring revenue stream through demand for maintenance, parts and other expendable products.

NOV recently completed acquisition of smaller rival Robbins & Myers will allow the energy equipment contractor to broaden scale and scope of the solutions that it offers to oil and gas customers worldwide. In particular, the move will help NOV to strengthen its position as a supplier of blowout preventer (a critical safety machine that can shut a well off in case of an emergency), as Robbins & Myers is the fourth-largest maker of such devices.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Tyler Crowe]

Let's face it, building pipeline to move oil and gas takes a long time, and several refiners and exploration and production companies just can't wait around for these pipes to get built. That is a large reason why HollyFrontier (NYSE: HFC  ) just announced that it and its midstream subsidiary Holly Energy Partners (NYSE: HEP  ) plan to add rail capacity of 70,000 barrels per day to its operations to move oil from Holly Energy's pipes in Southeast New Mexico to HollyFrontier's refining facilities in the region.

  • [By Robert Rapier]

The refinery logistics segment has done quite well, even when the associated refiner has struggled a bit. We likeHolly Energy Partners(NYSE: HEP) for the long haul. I covered the partnership in some depth inHoly Holly, What a Deal.

Master limited partnerships are not like other stocks, and the metrics we use to compare an MLP to its peers differ from the metrics we use to compare regular companies. For example, instead of the traditional P/E ratio, we emphasize MLP-specific metrics like distribution coverage ratio, and today's focus: price to distributable cash flow (P/DCF). I'll use MPLX (NYSE: MPLX  ) , Tesoro Logistics (NYSE: TLLP  ) , and Holly Energy Partners (NYSE: HEP  ) as our three examples.

10 Best Trucking Stocks To Watch For 2014

The massive supply of natural gas that has resulted from new drilling technologies applied to U.S. shale fields over the past few years has been a boon not only to consumers who use gas for heating their homes, but also to a variety of companies, including chemical, steel and fertilizer manufacturers, for whom energy costs are substantial.

The U.S. has been inundated with so much cheap natural gas, in fact, that trucking companies are increasingly switching over to gas-powered engines for their fleets, while auto manufactures are offering hybrid vehicles that have the ability to burn both compressed natural gas and gasoline.

And now, the next logical step of the natural gas-fueled transformation of the transport industry -- gas-powered locomotives -- looks to be in its early stages.

U.S. railroads show interest in natural gas
Since the 1950s, U.S. locomotives have been powered mainly by diesel. But with the combination of relatively low natural gas prices and the threat of more stringent emissions standards for locomotives slated to take effect in 2015, many of the nation's biggest rail companies are reconsidering their traditional fuel of choice.

Yet an interesting thing happened. While the news stories have gone from bad to worse, most emerging markets have been quietly enjoying a rally since early February. The iShares MSCI Emerging Markets ETF (EEM) is up about 7%, and the iShares MSCI South Africa ETF (EZA) is up fully 17%.

Investors have pretty well forgotten about emerging markets over the past three years. The RICcountries of Brazil, Russia, India and China no longer excite. Nor do more exotic non-BRIC locales such as South Africa. The iShares MSCI South Africa ETF (EZA) is down by roughly 15% since the beginning of 2011, while the S&P 500 has gained nearly 45%.

For starters, there theiShares MSCI South Africa ETF(EZA). The fund is down about 11% in the last year, but remember that emerging markets dramatically underperformed across the board in 2013. And if you believe in value investing, this may be a good opportunity to buy.
