Can you really take a company's yearly guidance seriously? Who can predict future events a year from now? It's so hard most companies skip the ordeal. Who can blame them? So many unforeseen events can derail a company's guidance. Yet, a few daredevil companies continue giving their yearly outlook. As far as I'm concerned, that's akin to writing the front page of next year's Wall Street Journal. I've already highlighted how Caterpillar (CAT) and Parker Hannifin (PH) - two excellent companies - almost never get their yearly guidance right.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Ben Levisohn]

Iron Mountain’s (IRM) story is now well known. Beset by a secular decline in its paper storage business, Iron Mountain has bet that a conversion into a real-estate investment trust can cure what ails it, by attracting investors interested in its potential yield. The IRS hasn’t seemed too willing to let Iron Mountain become a REIT, but the fact that it could is most likely all that stands in the way of the stock and a lower share price. And so Iron Mountain remains range bound, as investors wait to see what the IRS will do.

    Getty Images

But maybe even the REIT conversion won’t be the savior Iron Mountain–and its investors–hope it will be. Jefferies’ Dan Dolev and team explain:

The outcome of the IRS’ ruling is difficult to predict, but our analysis shows a potentially more muted upside and a bigger downside than many believe. A favorable ruling could trigger a short squeeze, somewhat offset by Event Driven Hedge Funds liquidating. An influx of REIT investors is possible, but our analysis shows that many already own [Iron Mountain]. Alternatively, an adverse ruling could steer attention back to weakening fundamentals, potentially leading to the P/E’s of IRM (24x) and Recall (13x) converging.

Given an already tentative adverse ruling, the bar is high for [Iron Mountain] to convince the IRS that its racking structures are indeed real estate. The IRS would have to ignore its 1975 revenue ruling that it has relied on heavily for nearly 40 years. Even if [Iron Mountain] became a REIT, there is still no guarantee that REIT dedicated investors would buy the stock, especially given rising secular concerns.

Shares of Iron Mountain have dropped 2.1% to $25.86 at 3:47 p.m.

    Monday's Volume: 2.16 million

    Three-Month Average Volume: 1.41 million

    Volume % Change: 95%

From a technical perspective, IRM bounced modestly higher here right above some near-term support at $26 with above-average volume. This stock looks like it might have formed a double bottom chart pattern at $25.91 to $25.53, after shares plunged sharply back in May to late June from $39.32 to $25.91. Shares of IRM have now started to rebound off that $25.53 low with strong upside volume flows. That move is quickly pushing IRM within range of triggering a near-term breakout trade. That trade will hit if IRM manages to take out Monday's high of $26.94 and then once it clears its 50-day moving average at $27.40 with high volume.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in IRM as long as it's trending above some near-term support levels at $26 or above that recent low of $25.53 and then once it sustains a move or close above those breakout levels with volume that's near or above 1.41 million shares. If that breakout hits soon, then IRM will set up to re-test or possibly take out its next major overhead resistance levels at $28.54 to $29.08. Any high-volume move above those levels will then give IRM a chance to re-fill some of its previous gap down zone from June that started at $34.

5 Best Diversified Bank Stocks To Watch Right Now

Few people would accuse Warren Buffett of being hostile to shareholders of Berkshire Hathaway (NYSE: BRK-A  ) (NYSE: BRK-B  ) . He's open, forthright, and doesn't pad his own pockets at the expense of investors. With a $100,000 salary and 21.4% stake in the largely financial conglomerate, Buffett does well when his shareholders do.

Yet, there's one area where he comes up short. As Buffett acknowledged in his most recent letter to shareholders, "A number of Berkshire shareholders -- including some of my good friends -- would like Berkshire to pay a cash dividend."

For those of you that follow Berkshire -- and, if you do, I urge you to check out our page dedicated to the company's upcoming annual meeting by clicking here -- it'll come as no surprise that Buffett isn't a stranger to dividends. By his own admission, he "relishes" the ones Berkshire receives from most of the stocks it owns. In 2012, its earnings included a staggering $1.1 billion in dividends from its "Big Four" investments alone: Coca-Cola, Wells Fargo, IBM, and American Express.

In the second half of the year, Crescent established new positions in a few companies that have more such global footprints. We initiated investments in Google (GOOG), as well as the advertising agencies Interpublic (IPG) and WPP (WPP). The fortunes of all three are tied directly to the level of global advertising spend, and they all saw their shares prices decline due to concerns of a recession-related slowdown. At our purchase price, we believe we were buying each at roughly 11-13x our estimated earnings for 2012 should the fears of a macroeconomic slowdown prove correct. This strikes us as a very reasonable multiple to pay for asset-light global businesses that generate strong free cash flow across the business cycle and have the capability to grow earnings greater than GDP in a normal economic environment.

Another area that is intriguing to us is the North American energy sector which looks to have a number of interesting catalysts currently. While the energy sector is at present only a modest overweight in the portfolios, we have been encouraged by several trends taking place for a number of years. These positive developments are also having an impact that goes far beyond the energy sector itself. Many believe that the U.S. will become energy independent and possibly a net exporter of natural gas and oil (currently restricted by law) in the next decade. This opinion is based primarily on the development of new drilling techniques (i.e. horizontal drilling, and high pressure fracking) that have enabled companies to access oil and natural gas reserves in shale formations that were previously not economically viable. The ability to tap into this acreage is a game-changer in our view and is already having a tremendous impact on the economy. Employment rates in these mostly rural areas surrounding the shale basins are very high and companies thus find hiring extremely competitive. Strong labor markets tend to create strong local economies. Oil States International (OIS) has been able to capitalize on this trend by providing housing and other services to oil service workers that are in demand in the area. CST Brands (CST) operates gas stations in Texas, but it is increasingly looking to broaden its product offering beyond fuel. Rail companies like Union Pacific (UNP), Canadian Pacific (CP), Kansas City Southern (KSU) and Genesee and Wyoming (GWR) have also benefited substantially. Given that shale areas are rural and often lacking infrastructure, substantial investment must be made to support drilling and production activities. Without pipelines in place, railroads have been the primary takeaway mechanism for moving production to the various clusters of refining capacity around the United States. In order to serve this demand, massive investment in railcars has been nee

After falling over 87% in the past five years, Teekay Tankers (NYSE: TNK  ) believes that the supply of carrying capacity is finally aligning itself with demand again. For 2014, the company expects the lowest fleet growth since 2002. One area that has been more promising lately has been Lilly's Elanco animal health division, which has had its revenue climb almost 50% and its pre-tax profits more than double between 2010 and 2012. Elanco faces huge competition from the recently spun-off Zoetis (NYSE: ZTS  ) , as well as the Merck (NYSE: MRK  ) animal-health division, both of which managed to post stronger revenue growth in the first quarter than Elanco did. One big question that Lilly will face is whether it makes sense to follow Pfizer's (NYSE: PFE  ) lead and spin off Elanco, but given Lilly's overall challenges elsewhere, it might want to hold onto Elanco if only to maintain a brighter spot in the gloom of patent expirations.

    Short-sellers attack like animals
The spinoff of Pfizer's animal health division Zoetis (NYSE: ZTS  ) has acted as both a positive and negative for the company as a whole. By spinning off Zoetis, Pfizer was able to make it easier for shareholders to understand how each company earns its keep. Conversely, though, Pfizer's human branded-drug segment is facing quite the patent cliff compared to Zoetis, which has seen steady mid-single-digit growth thanks to a surge in households owning pets and treating them like members of the family. With shareholders voting to overwhelmingly tender their Pfizer shares for Zoetis shares, short-sellers must be thinking that Pfizer's growth outlook without Zoetis' bump is going to be more erratic.

Top 5 New Stocks To Own Right Now: HyperSolar Inc (HYSR)

Hypersolar, Inc., incorporated on February 18, 2009, is developing renewable hydrogen using sunlight and any source of water, including seawater and wastewater. Unlike hydrocarbon fuels, such as oil, coal and natural gas, where carbon dioxide and other contaminants are released into the atmosphere when used, hydrogen fuel usage produces pure water as the only byproduct. The Company technology includes HyperSolar H2Generator. Its nano-size particle is designed to mimic photosynthesis and contains a solar absorber that generates electrons from sunlight, as well as integrated cathode and anode areas to readily split water and transfer those electrons to the molecular bonds of hydrogen.

The HyperSolar H2Generator consists of the following primary stages: Reactor Vessels, Hydrogen Compressor and Hydrogen Storage. The reactor vessels resemble transparent rectangular boxes containing water and billions of nanoparticles suspended in solution. When exposed to sunlight, hydrogen gas will bubble up into an air gap on top for separation and collection. Produced hydrogen gas will be compressed for space efficient storage. Hydrogen can be stored in compressed gas tanks or chemical canisters depending on the application. The HyperSolar H2Generator will be a self-contained renewable hydrogen production system that requires only sunlight and any source of water.

The Company competes with Air Products and Chemicals Inc. and Air Liquide.

But any new technology will pose the same types of risks for early stage investorsespecially if its so-called green technology.

High Biomass Sorghum

High biomass sorghum is a type of sorghum, which is primarily developed for biomass yield. As such, high biomass sorghum is suited for the generation of renewable electric power and the creation of cellulosic biofuels. High biomass types are seed propagated, and requires less water and nitrogen fertilizer. As an annual crop, sorghum is harvested the year it is planted. This provides bioenergy facilities with a growing and flexible source of biomass, and a complementary feedstock to perennials, such as sugarcane or switchgrass. The Company ES 5200 and ES 5201 products contains its Skyscraper trait. These hybrids, developed through its partnership with Texas A&M University, are designed for single-cut production systems.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By James E. Brumley]

Despite the fact that markets are right around breakeven levels for Wednesday, there are relatively few stocks that are up today, and even fewer that are up on strong volume. For the NYSE, 54% of its listed equities are in the red this morning, and 58% of the total volume seen so far has been bearish volume. That's what makes Ceres Inc. (NASDAQ:CERE) so interesting early Wednesday. As one of the few tickers that's not only up, but up on higher volume, CERE is a standout worth a closer look. And, that closer look reveals something even more compelling about the way things are coming together for this small cap stock.

  • [By Roberto Pedone]

Another renewable energy player that looks ready to trigger a big breakout trade is Ceres (CERE), which sells seeds to produce renewable biomass feedstocks that can enable the large-scale replacement of petroleum and other fossil fuels. This stock has been hammered by the bears so far in 2013, with shares off sharply by 66%.

If you take a look at the chart for Ceres, you'll notice that this stock has just started to trend back above its 50-day moving average of $1.45 a share with heavy upside volume flows. Volume so far today has already registered over 1.15 million shares, which is well above its three-month average action of 670,538 shares. This spike back above its 50-day is now quickly pushing shares of CERE within range of triggering a big breakout trade.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in CERE if it manages to break out above some near-term overhead resistance levels at $1.67 to $1.68 a share with high volume. Look for a sustained move or close above those levels with volume that hits near or above its three-month average action of 670,538 shares. If that breakout hits soon, then CERE will set up to re-test or possibly take out its next major overhead resistance levels at $2 to $2.50 a share. Shares of CERE could even tag $3 if this breakout triggers with strong volume.

Traders can look to buy CERE off any weakness to anticipate that breakout and simply use a stop that sits right below $1.40 a share. One could also buy CERE off strength once it takes out those breakout levels with volume and then simply use a stop that sits a comfortable percentage from your entry point.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Paul Ausick]

As prices for solar panels and modules stabilize, stocks in the solar energy companies have once more put on a growth spurt. Since the beginning of the year shares of SunPower Corp. (NASDAQ: SPWR) are up more than 300% and shares of China Canadian Solar Co. Ltd. (NASDAQ: CSIQ) are up nearly as much. Industry consolidation is not a far-fetched notion any longer.
