With temperatures plunging throughout much of the country, demand is just 4% below the record set Jan. 7, when the polar vortex engulfed much of the Midwest and Northeast with arctic temperatures. A second cold blast this week pushed thermometers well below zero in parts of the Midwest. Meanwhile, demand is rising in the South, where up to 50 million people face a rare bout of freezing temperatures, snow and ice.
January has already set seven of the top 10 all-time demand days for natural gas.
"You have these intense cold swaths affecting large population areas, and that's what drives use,'' said Jack Weixel, Denver-based director of energy analysis for Platts Bentek Energy.

Advisors' Opinion:- [By Sean Williams]
Oil and gas exploration and production (E&P) company Nabors Industries (NYSE: NBR ) was today's biggest gainer, adding 5.9%, after it announced its intentions to add two new, independent members to its board of directors. Nabors' management has been under fire from its top shareholders, Pamplona Capital Management, which has been critical of Nabors' underperformance relative to its peers. The addition of two new board members should help align investors' interests with those of the company. In addition, Nabors announced early last month that it would begin paying a $0.04 quarterly dividend. These may be baby steps, but they're steps in the right direction for Nabors' shareholders.

The driller is putting the money toward funding a tender offer for the company's 2019 9.25% notes. There's $1.125 billion of that paper outstanding and, if I did the math correctly, Nabors will be offering a bit more than a 25% premium to par value for the notes.
