In the anguished debate over the value of a college education vs. high costs and declining opportunities, a new Pew Research Center study weighs in resoundingly on the side of higher education.
“On virtually every measure of economic well-being and career attainment—from personal earnings to job satisfaction to the share employed full time—young college graduates are outperforming their peers with less education,” reports the 66-page Pew study, which was released earlier this week.
Indeed, the report, entitled The Rising Cost of Not Going to College, goes farther in stating that the disparity in economic outcomes between those with and without college educations “has never been greater in the modern era.”
The report, likely to provoke a heated response from college skeptics, demonstrates this conclusion by contrasting the economic performance of “millennial” generation full-time workers, ages 25 to 32.
In constant dollars, those with just high school diplomas make just $28,000 a year compared to their early boomer counterparts in 1979, who earned over $32,000 annually; the slope goes steadily downhill from there.

For the past several years, Berkshire has contrasted its own cost-free float provided by profitable underwriting against the industry (unimpressive) tendency to lose money on underwriting while generating net returns from investment income. So far, so good. Less edifying, though, is the repeated contrast of Berkshire track record of profitability to State Farm…even though, as a mutual company, State Farm profitability goals are inherently different from for-profit insurers like Berkshire. It true that through year-end 2013, Berkshire underwriters have ow operated at an underwriting profit for eleven consecutive years, but so have ACE (ACE), American Financial (AFG), AmTrust Financial (AFSI), Arch Capital (ACGL), Chubb (CB), HCC (HCC), Progressive (PGR), RLI (RLI), and W.R. Berkley (WRB), any or all of whom provide a more meaningful comparison than contrasting Berkshire results to a company that not out to produce a profit in the first place.

Advisors' Opinion:- [By Sean Williams]
Some might see this action as all the more reason to hunker down at home with Altria (NYSE: MO ) , which commands nearly half of all premium brand market share in the U.S. and has one of the safest-yielding dividends imaginable. However, I contend that the U.S.' antismoking regulations are too strict and poised to get even stricter as the years progress. Furthermore, President Obama's 2014 budget proposes a 93% federal government tax increase per pack to $1.95 from $1.01. In my opinion, the geographic diversification of Philip Morris will trump the domestic concerns Altria will face in the coming decade any day of the week!
- [By Jonas Elmerraji]
Even Verizon's ample dividend looks tepid compared with the 5.1% payout over at tobacco and alcohol firm Altria Group (MO). Altria is the biggest tobacco company in the U.S., led by its flagship Marlboro brand. Its other businesses include cigars and smokeless tobacco, Ste. Michelle Wine Estates and a massive stake in SABMiller (SBMRY). In short, Altria is a textbook "sin stock" -- and that's proven heavenly for shareholders in the wake of the Great Recession.
Altria's business is stable, it's predictable, and it's massive. But that's not going to last for long. The fact is, the firm's business is slowly dying as demand for tobacco products continues to decline in the U.S. While international sales continue to show growth, especially in emerging markets, MO long ago spun its overseas business into Phillip Morris International (PM). But with a gradual decline in cigarette sales already priced into shares, MO's substantial cash flows and increasing exposure to the beverage business provide some shareholder consolation.
Altria's SABMiller stake, for instance, adds up to around $7 per share for MO, providing reduced risk for a material chunk of the firm's balance sheet. After all, the alcoholic beverage business remains hot right now. Investors should continue to expect Altria to payout the majority of its cash flows to investors for the foreseeable future. That makes a hike to its 44-cent dividend look likely in the next quarter.

Advisors' Opinion:- [By Jonas Elmerraji]
Thinks aren't looking quite so auspicious for shares of small-cap Greek shipping stock Costamare (CMRE). Greek equities enjoyed some buoyancy this year, the result of getting oversold due to headline risk during the economic crisis in the Eurozone. But this stock's down days don't look behind it yet.
That's because Costamare is currently forming the bearish opposite of the bullish pattern in NTT: a descending triangle. CMRE's setup is formed by downtrending resistance above shares and horizontal support down at $16.75 that shares are getting pushed down into. A move through $16.75 is the signal to sell this stock.
Whenever you're looking at any technical price pattern, it's critical to think in terms of buyers and sellers. Triangles, rectangles, and other price pattern names are a good quick way to explain what's going on in this stock, but they're not the reason it's tradable. Instead, it all comes down to supply and demand for shares.
That support line at $16.75 is a price where there's an excess of demand of shares; in other words, it's a place where buyers have been more eager to jump in and buy at lower levels than sellers have been to unload them. That's what makes the move below it so significant -- a breakdown indicates that sellers are finally strong enough to absorb all of the excess demand below that price level. Wait for that signal to happen before you bet against CMRE.
